Corrective Jaw Surgery

For some patients, a discrepancy in jaw position is too great for the bite to be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone. This can happen as a result of injury, growth abnormalities, genetic syndromes, environmental habits, or other causes. In these cases, surgery may be the best option to fully correct the jaw position and restore a more balanced and healthy bite.

Corrective jaw surgery is typically performed midway through orthodontic treatment, as braces are used to prepare the teeth for surgery, and then to complete the bite and smile esthetics after the surgery.

Who needs corrective jaw surgery?

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you may be an excellent candidate for corrective jaw surgery:

  • Difficulty chewing, biting food, or swallowing
  • Severe overbite or underbite
  • Open bite (unable to close front teeth together)
  • Unbalanced facial appearance
  • Facial injury or birth defects
  • Receding or protruding chin
  • Sleep apnea (breathing problems when sleeping, including snoring)

If you are a candidate for surgical orthodontic treatment, we will be happy to discuss your case with you in detail, walk you through each step of the treatment process, and set up an evaluation with an oral surgeon.

Corrective jaw surgery can have a dramatic and positive effect on your appearance, speech, bite function, and overall outlook on life! Contact our office to learn about the best treatment option for you, your needs, and your smile.
